During the week of August 23 to August 27, a group of players ranging in ages from 8 through 15 from the Scarborough based Toronto Skillz Soccer School will be spending a week with coaches from Escuela Municipal Del Santander at the Laureano Ruiz Soccer School. Our players will take part in technical and tactical sessions currently being taught to young players within the Spanish professional club system. The camp has been designed by the renowned Spanish master coach Laureano Ruiz.
The content of the camp will be delivered by the head coach, Attila Nyiri, Founder and Head Coach of the Laureano Ruiz Soccer Academy and the head trainer from the Municipal School of Soccer in Santander. Mr. Nyiri has played at every level of the game of soccer in Europe and North America. Since 1999 Mr. Nyiri has focused his attention on teaching the game to children “discarded” or found “not to meet the standards” of the better, elite and premier teams. It is these players who Mr. Nyiri develops into elite, premier and State ODP players. Mr. Nyiri holds a USSF B license and the Spanish Coaching Certificate from the Escuela Municipal de Futbol de Santander issued by Maestro Laureano Ruiz and has coached in the Hudson Valley since 1999. He has coached both EHYSL ODP (select) programs and was New York State Olympic Development Head Coach from 2004 to 2007. Mr. Nyiri has successfully placed players in the Region I pool of the ODP program. Mr. Nyiri also created the Woman’s Soccer Program at Ulster County Community College in 2006.
Laureano Ruiz played professional soccer himself, but is best known today as a youth coach. In the 1970’s he was the youth coach for FC Barcelona. In 1976 he was the coach of FC Barcelona’s first team. Since 1987, he has been the head of the Municipal School of Soccer in Santander, home of Racing de Santander. The school is part of the Instituto Municipal de Deportes of Ayuntamiento de Santander.
He is known for introducing the 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 formations as a customary formation of play for his youth teams long before any others were using this formation. His teams have won seven Spanish youth titles; five with FC Barcelona and two with Racing de Santander. He is currently an instructor with the South Korean Soccer Federation. In his years of coaching, he has developed such notable players as Iván de la Peña, Iván Helguera, Johan Neeskens and Juan Carlos, who later became the captain of FC Barcelona and the Spanish National Team.
Mr. Ruiz also worked with Johan Cruyff. During the time Mr. Cruyff coached the Dream Team at FC Barcelona, he felt that part of their success was due to his use of the principles he learned during his time with Mr. Ruiz. Hristo Stoichkov was also mentored by Mr. Ruiz. Like Johan Cruyff, Hristo Stoichkov also employs Mr. Ruiz’s methods at his Hristo Stoichkov Academy in Catalunia.
Jake Doodnath, Program Director of TS3:
"Our elite players are well versed in the methods promoted by Mr. Ruiz. His methods are integrated into our player development program. When this opportunity became available for our players, it was a given our players would jump at the opportunity to work with Mr Ruiz and his coaches."
Attila Nyiri, Founder and Head Coach of the Laureano Ruiz Soccer Academy:
“ We are extremely excited to host Toronto Skillz Soccer School at our state of the art training facility. Our organizations share the same philosophy and passion for developing players. We look forward to working with the Toronto Skillz Soccer School over the coming years to improve the technical and tactical ability of young North American soccer players. In addition to attending our camp, we have also extended an invitation to the Coaching Staff and Players of the Toronto Skillz Soccer School to be our guests at the Municipal School of Soccer in Santander, home of Racing de Santander in Spain.”
